Day 52: Futuro!

Goal 8: I have finalized the plans and I’ll be staying within a rare Futuro house over Labor Day Weekend. What is a Futuro House? Here is how Stephanie Pain characterized it within the June 16, 2007 issue of the New Scientist “It’s not hard to put a date on the Futuro house. It looks like a flying saucer and it’s made of plastic: it could only come from the 1960s.”

These space-age, pre-fab, circular homes are a Finnish design and ubercool; nevertheless, very few still exist. Less than 60 are known and only 16 within the USA. Forty years ago, in April 1968, the marketing literature stated that the “futuro represents the modern, comfortable way of housing–practical coziness. Futuro is the dwelling of the future.”

The fad of plastic homes died quickly in the early 1970s as oil prices began to rise (that sounds familiar). The particular Futuro I’ll be staying within is located within the northwoods of Wisconsin, just outside of Minocqua. However, do not be fooled: this is not your average cabin! More about this goal with pictures, stories, and links on September 7th.
