Goal 54: Louis Armstrong’s Hot Fives and Sevens is now sold as a 4 CD box set collection, but originally it was over 60 acetate sides which were recorded between 1925 and 1929 at the Okeh studios.
The name comes from the different number of band members for each session, as Armstrong used both a quinet and a septet for these recordings…the ‘Hot Fives’ and the ‘Hot Sevens’.
Louis Armstrong is still remember as an amazing trumpet player; however, this is far from a solo project. In fact, the members of these two groups includes many well known musicians from the big band era: Kid Ory, Johnny Dodds, Johnny St. Cyr, Earl Hines, Jimmy Noone. I listened to all the tracks over a single night while cooking, eating, cleaning, and preparing for my week. It was a good Sunday evening.
